Hotel Monteleone
New Orleans, Louisiana

opera house

History:

Antonio Monteleone operated a very successful shoe factory in Sicily when he heard great things about America. Antonio arrived in New Orleans around 1880 and opened a cobbler shop on Royal Street.

In 1886, Mr. Monteleone bought a 64-room hotel called the Commercial Hotel on the corner of Royal and Iberville street in New Orleans’ world famous French Quarter. That was only the beginning of an amazing historical landmark that is one of the last great family owned and operated hotels in the city. Since 1886, four generations of Monteleones have dedicated themselves to making their hotel what it was and still is a sparkling jewel in the heart of the French Quarter.

There have been five major additions to the Hotel Monteleone. The first was in 1903 when 30 rooms were added. The next addition occurred in 1908, during a time of financial panic in the United States; when 300 more rooms were added. 1908 was also the year that the name of the hotel was changed from the Commercial Hotel to Hotel Monteleone. In 1913, Antonio Monteleone passed away and was succeeded by his son Frank who added 200 more rooms in 1928, a year before another horrible crash in the U.S. economy.
The Hotel Monteleone was one of America’s few family- owned hotels to weather the depression, and remained unchanged until 1954. That year the fourth addition required the demolition of the original building and the foundation was laid for a completely new building that would include guest facilities, ballrooms, dining rooms and cocktail lounges. In 1964, under the direction of Bill Monteleone, who took over after his father passed in 1958, more floors, guestrooms, and a Sky Terrace with swimming pools and cocktail lounges were added.

History of Haunting:

* The 14th floor, which is actually the 13th floor, seems to be one of the most active floors in the hotel. It also seems to be the most popular with the Spirits of children. It could be because it is reported that many children caught diseases like yellow fever, and died at the hotel.
*
There is a report that a couple said an elevator stopped on the wrong floor, leading the couple down a hallway that grew chilly and then they saw ghostly images of children playing.
*
A Spirit of a lost little girl has appeared in front of the guests, taken their hands, asked for help. She looked into their eyes and then disappeared into thin air.
*
Spirits of various children have been seen running around and playing in the hallway that had become freezing cold in temperature.
*
A guest was staying in a suite on the 14th floor was relaxing in bed one morning. When She looked up to see a young boy about three years old walk by the foot of her bed, Since he had come from the sitting room of her suite, She immediately got up to see if the door was open. She said he was a friendly little fellow wearing a striped shirt.
*
In the late 1890's Josephine and Jacques Begere, their 3 year old son Maurice and his nanny came to stay at the Hotel Monteleone. Josephine and Jacques Begere went to the Opera in the famous French Opera House on Bourbon Street, while the nanny stayed with Maurice at the hotel. He had not been feeling well and while they were gone he developed a high fever. Shortly after the parents got back to the hotel, Maurice had a convulsion and died unexpectedly. Maurice could be one of the Spirits that has been seen and even possibly photographed.
*
A large, antique, grandfather clock stands in the lobby. Witnesses has seen a male Spirit, thought to be the man who built the clock, working on this grand antique during both the daylight and evening hours.
*
During a Mardi Gras Celebration, a male Spirit dressed in absolutely nothing but a feathered mask, appeared in front of a couple in their room.
*
The haunted Hotel Monteleone employees speaks of "Ms. Clean" and she is the spirit of a maid. She came from a family of maids. Her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother were all employed by the hotel. "Ms. Clean picks up after the current housekeeping staff to ensure that the hotel is cleaned to her high standards.
* In 2003, a paranormal group consisting on mainly psychics investigated the haunted Hotel Monteleone. While at the hotel, the psychics claimed to have made contact with more than a dozen earthbound Spirits. Among them were several former employees, a man named William Wildemere who died inside the hotel of natural causes, a male Spirit who identifies himself as engineer named Rhett still putters around, keeping an eye on things, he also died in the hotel of natural causes. Also a boy who was much older when he died but enjoys returning to Hotel Monteleone as a 10-year-old to play hide-and-seek with another young spirit.
*
An online search also came up with another haunted story. The F. J. Monteleone suite is a 1,400 square foot suite that can hold up to 75 people in the parlor seems to also be a location where activity has been reported. The F.J. Monteleone suite is the largest of the suites and runs around $3500 a night. Supposedly the ghosts of perfectly shaped humans are seen in many of the claw foot chairs.

The hotel Monteleone has a restaurant door that opens almost every evening and then closes again, even though it is locked. The doors are located at the first floor dining room called the Le Cafe, found in the lobby area which is only open for breakfast and lunch. Some think it is the Spirit of a former owner. The psychic investigators that were mentioned above claimed to have captured the Spirits of two former employees causing the mysterious opening of the locked doors to Le Cafe. One spirit is that of a maintenance worker who prefers the doors open. The other entity is a butler or waiter.
NOTE: We found that the phenomenon doesn’t happen every night as had been told prior. It does happen periodically and the last known time was 2 months prior to our visit. We investigated the doors on our first night and found them to be on a magnetic system in which a button is pressed to release them.

*
Jimmy in security told us that recently while watching the security cameras, he witnessed a strange ball of light moving around inside an empty elevator. This happened for a couple of days in a row and then never appeared again.
*
Housekeepers say that when they are cleaning rooms and walk out to retrieve something from their carts. They come back and find the rooms doors locked.
*
Guests have claimed that while staying on the 14th floor they hear what sounds like someone dragging a pipe down the hall outside their rooms. We heard this also and found it to be a housekeeping cart.
*
Jimmy from security was doing his rounds one night around 11PM and was up on the top floor where the fitness room is. When he got to the fitness room he heard a exercise bike running and the lights were off. He opened the door with his key, which is the only way to get in and found a man on the bike all the way in the back of the room. Jimmy asked the man "How did you get into the room?" and the man replied "The man who just walked through the door let me in". Jimmy then asked him "Why are you riding the bicycle in the dark?" and the man replied "I like the dark".
*
Jimmy has seen this man one other time in the parking garage around 6pm one night. He was wearing khaki shorts, a white pull over shirt and tennis shoes. When he shared this with co-workers, others had also seen him in the parking garage.
*
A Year ago security has also experienced the fire alarm going off on the east wing and the west wing at the same time. The elevators also shut down, but that could just be a safety feature.
*
Linda, the food and beverage manager told us that in November 2010 she had a strange experience in the Hunt Room Grill. They always light the candelabra and all the sternos on the tables when they get ready to open. She noticed that all 5 candles were out on the candelabra so she went to relight it with one of the steno lights. She found that all of the sternos were still full of fluid but had been blown out, except for 3 that still had customers sitting at the tables. It is thought that alot of activity took place between September and November 2010.
*
Linda also told us about a couple who had stayed at the hotel many times, came in for dinner one night. They said that they loved the Hunt Room restaurant but weren't staying at the Monteleone this time because they were uncomfortable last time they stayed there. The last time they had spent all day walking and when they returned to their room somewhere around room #1450 and 1454. The wife went to the bathroom to wash her face while her husband relaxed on the bed. The wife noticed that she had left the soap on the basin earlier in the day but now found it in the soap dish. At the same time the lights and nightlight started to flicker and her husband called to her. He claimed he had a strange feeling in his legs.
The next morning they told the front desk people that strange things were happening in their room. The front desk asked "Did you feel like you were being tucking in for the night?" The husband said "Yes". The front desk asked "Was the soap moved?" The wife said "Yes". Well then you just met the ghost we call "Miss Clean"

*
Linda also told us that the night before 2/11/11 she used her key to unlock the liquor room. She then went in to get some napkins off a shelf when she heard a terrible sound that repeated itself a few times. It came from a woman and was a cross between a sigh and a whine. Linda said "It sounded like anguish." Linda also said that last night the lights were flicking in the service area of the carousel bar.
Personal Experiences:
*
As soon as we arrived to our room 1462 we requested for someone to bring us a in room refrigerator. It arrived sometime while we were out exploring and placed on the floor. The next morning when we woke up, I asked Scott why did he leave the fridge door open and in turn he blamed it on me. The door was all the way open and could not happen by itself. There was a suction on the door and also there was resistance when the door was dragged across the carpet.
*
The staff was so efficient in tiding up our room that we were not able to document any movement of trigger objects left throughout the room.
Evidence:
* On 2/11/11 at 7:11pm Toni was taking photos on the 14th floor trying to re-create a photo that was shown to us of a ghost boy. Unexpectedly Toni ended up capturing something else. The photo seems to show a spirit of a woman getting ready to turn down a hallway which leads to the Monteleone suite. The Spirit also looks to be wearing a uniform which could be a maid, housekeeper or a nannie. Within the hour of the photo being taken, we were able to go to the hotels security and review the video taken from the area. No one matching the description was seen.

Monteleone Maid
* This is a closer version of the photo in which you can see more detail. We believe her to be approximately 5'6" by using comparison photos that were taken later in the evening of our team members in the same location.
